Night and Day　　（2004-01-01）

1932年にコール・ポーターがミュージカル『Gay Divorce（陽気な離婚）』のために作った曲です。ポーターは大学時代から出演する役者に合わせて、アテ込みで曲を書いていたので、この曲も主演のフレッド・アステアの声質を考慮して作曲されています。

舞台は34年に映画化され、ここでも主演のフレッド・アステアが唄っていました（邦題『コンチネンタル』）。
しかし、映画版は舞台とは異なるストーリーで、音楽もポーターの「Night and Day」以外は別の作曲家のものに差し替えられた、つまりヒットナンバーの「Night and Day」とタイトル『Gay Divorce』だけを借用した別作品となっていました。

フレッド・アステアは、1933年11月、レオ・ライスマン（Leo Reisman ）楽団の伴奏で初録音していますが、こちらのＣＤに収録されているのは、その翌年録音したＲＫＯ映画のサウンドトラック盤です。アステアは、他にオスカー・ピーターソンと共演したレコードや、最後のレコーディングとなった1975年8月のセッションでも「Night and Day」を録音していました。
